creative genius

Summer tv has peaked in the form of Big Brother 8. I would like to thank the creative geniuses at CBS behind this show for coming up with a show so ridiculously entertaining it is simply fabulous. This week's food challenge came in the form of "Mission InPastaBowl" (HAHA!) where the house guests dove into giant pools of spaghetti and meatballs in teams in an effort to match up the meatballs with the same name foods.

On to the people aspect, I feel incredibly sorry for Danielle, hate her dad, don't understand how it's possible for Amber to cry as much as she does, and think that Jen staring at her own reflection in a spoon clearly sums up her personality. I cannot get enough of this amazingly ridiculous show!

burning... part one.

"I'm the straw that stirs the drink."

I finally finished the book I've been reading, Ladies and Gentlemen, The Bronx is Burning, and thus I am moving on to watching the miniseries on ESPN which I've been recording. The book rocked and it'll be interesting to watch it come to life on tv.

The first episode focuses on the Yankees bringing Reggie Jackson to New York for the 1977 season. Played by Danel Sunjata, Reggie's got the big hair, big glasses and tight pants to fit the bill. They somehow managed to enlarge John Turturro's ears to fit the role of Billy Martin and Oliver Platt donned a really terrible hairdo to play the part of George Steinbrenner. Being that those are the three main characters, ESPN has somehow managed to make it impossible to talk these guys seriously, but adds incredible entertainment value to the show.

Aside from the ongoing strife between Steinbrenner and Martin, Martin and Jackson, and Jackson and everyone, the episode is also sprinkled with the Son of Sam's rampage, the Beame administration and Jason Giambi's cameo as a NYC cab driver.

The REAL Reggie Jackson claims that he never made the comment about being the straw that stirs the drink... the media claims otherwise. Will anyone ever know the truth?

slop.

I caught up on Big Brother tonight and can't get over how ridiculous and entertaining this show is. Commentary:

- Why does Amber cry so damn much? That's ALL she does.
- Why is Jen so freakin' obnoxious? Worst Head of Household EVER.
- There needs to be cuter boys in the house.
- Jessica has GOT TO GO.

Bundles of entertainment all around - loved the Name That Pie competition!!

ESPYs

Tonight two of my favorite pastimes come together - sports and tv - in the form of the the 2007 ESPY Awards on ESPN, a tribute to some of the best sports moments in the past year. I love seeing all the cute boys of the sports world dressed up in their snazzy suits (Andy Roddick, Peyton Manning, Jimmie Johnson, etc.), with some music and movie stars (Josh Duhamel!) mixed in for entertainment value. The event was hosted by Jimmy Kimmel and Lebron James, and was just the right combination of comic and classy, honoring sports related achievements. This was probably a lot more adrenaline than I needed on a Sunday night when I am trying to wind down and gear up for another week of work, but still plenty fun!

YAY to Peyton Manning for winning Best Championship Performance and representing Best Team :)

Lots of singing

Watched two things on my DVR tonight - Singing Bee and Don't Forget the Lyrics. The first hosted by Joey Fatone and played just like an actual Spelling Bee. Contestants are chosen out of the audience (Price is Right style) and compete against each other completing song phrases until there's only one left. Pretty entertaining stuff.

Even more entertaining though was Don't Forget the Lyrics, played Who Wants to Be a Millionaire style with one contestant singing songs, guessing lyrics and locking in guesses to win more money or leave with what they've won so far. Generally speaking very entertaining but tonight's episode was ESPECIALLY entertaining because the contestant was HYSTERICAL. Super cute, very fun and really good at lyrics but had the whiniest.singing.voice.ever. Pure entertainment.

I can think of a few people who would be awesome to watch on this show. heh.

All Star Break

I'm currently watching the 2007 MLB All Star Game, which was started with a lot of fanfare and interviewsand montages, capped with a really cool tribute to Willie Mays. The game itself is so far it's usual not so exciting self, though I always love to see the players from different teams working together instead of against each othr. Posada exchanging high fives with Suzuki and what have you... and at least it can't possibly turn out to be as boring as last night's Home Run Derby which ran waaay late and caused a delay in the much anticipated premiere of The Bronx is Burning. All that marketing and promotion and then it doesn't air until an hour and change after it was supposed to. So unless you happened to be watching and saw that the Derby was running long and knew to fix your DVR to record what was supposed to air at 11PM (The Celebrity Softball match), then you totally missed out on recording The Bronx is Burning because your DVR recorded the second hour of the Derby instead. ESPN sure screwed that one up!

In the midst of all this baseball related tv, I am also DVRing Big Brother 8 (yes that show is still on and yes I'm actually watching!), Hell's Kitchen, The Singing Bee and Don't Forget the Lyrics. Ahh yes, the joy of really subpar summer television!

sidebar

I was watching SportsCenter earlier and they did an entire segment on Eva Longoria and Tony Parker's wedding in Paris, complete with commentary from a French news reporter. This is NOT SPORTS NEWS! It was really the type of thing you'd expect to see on Access Hollywood or Entertainment Tonight, and I was peeved that it was on SportsCenter.

At the moment I am pondering whether or not to venture outside in this 90+ degree weather or if I should continue to sit in my apartment in front of the tv (currently watching the Yankees pound away at the Angels) like a lazy piece of garbage. hmm.

Ladies and Gentlemen...

The Bronx is Burning is coming to ESPN! The 8 episode miniseries event starts Monday night at 10PM on ESPN (after the Home Run Derby) and I can't wait! I'm currently reading the book that this is based on (full title: Ladies and Gentlemen, The Bronx is Burning: 1977, Baseball, Politics, and the Battle for the Soul of a City), which is a fabulous portrayal of NYC in the 70's. 1997 was quite a year in New York - the blackout, the Son of Sam, the then-unknown Rupert Murdoch buying the Post, and two big battles between Mario Cuomo and Ed Koch and the Yankees' Manager Bill Martin and Reggie Jackson in his first year a a Yankee.

I will likely be behind in watching this series because I am still reading the book and want to finish that up before watching, but stay tuned a I am SURE I will have an opinion about what I see once I see it.

In the meantime and quite fittingly, today I'm off to Old Timers Day at Yankee Stadium, honoring the 30th anniversary of the '77 Yankees world championship!

not an exact science?

It's a slow and uneventful summer season of tv, which means that I've resorted to watching things I normally would not ever watch. In doing so, I stumbled upon a special called Science of Love hosted by Mark Consuelos, who also hosts the new reality show Age of Love, battle of the 40's vs. the 20's.

The subject is football player Adam Johnson. The project is figuring out just how scientific falling in love is. A team of "specialists" come up with Adam's supposed "perfect match" Casey Dee based on science (polygraphs, blood rates, etc.), while Adam comes up with his own pick, Nina, based on sheer instinct and attraction.

Date #1: Adam engineers his own date with Nina by deciding to take her to the Rose Bowl stadium and snapping some footballs. Nina is not amused and a total brat abut it, meanwhile I'm thinking how f-ing awesome it would be to be taken to the freakin' Rose Bowl. Then they go out for dinner and dancing - for the record, I think going to a club on a first date is a bad, bad idea. Seems to go well though until he goes in for a kiss and she announces that she doesn't kiss on the first date because she's not a "ho-bag." Seriously?

Date #2: Casey Dee, chosen by science, goes on a date with Adam that is also engineered by science. The location is the beach and the theory is that the sweat-inducing atmosphere would initiate sexual interest. Then there's bungee jumping, because apparently anxiety induces sexual attraction. So far, I think science is stupid. That being said, Adam and Casey Dee end up doing lots and lots of kissing - an act I believe Nina would refer to as "ho-bag"-like. Next comes a very scientifically chosen steak and asparagus dinner on the beach and then they sit by a bonfire on the beach and are forced to stare at each other for 5 minutes. Seems kind of awkward if you ask me, but Adam seemed to buy it.

So now what? Two good dates and Adam now has to choose who he likes better and after letting Nina and Casey Dee face off, science wins the battle! huh. who would've thought? I didn't think either dates were all that great but I will admit this much: I found this stupid show to be strangely fascinating!!
